This is the third edition of Titus Andronicus. On April 19, 1602 Thomas Millington transferred the right to publish the play to Thomas Pavier. However, the third edition was not printed until 1611, and lists Edward White, not Pavier, as the publisher. White and Millington published the first edition in 1594, and White was the lone publisher for the second edition in 1600, despite never actually holding the registration for the play.
The text of this third edition, like that of the second edition, corrects mistakes found in the first edition while introducing new ones. Scholars believe that an annotated version of this third edition is what was used to set the play for the First Folio, although the Folio version introduces an entirely new scene into Act 3 (Oxford Companion 478).
The copy shown above is one of twelve recorded in the English Short Title Catalogue, and one of two owned by the Folger Shakespeare Library. It was purchased by Henry Folger from the Sotheby’s sale of the Curzon-Howe family library in December 1907.
