John Hall, Susanna Hall’s husband, was buried on November 26, 1635, according to the Holy Trinity Church parish register. Next to the entry, an “X” added by a later hand highlights its significance. He died the day before, aged 60, and is buried in the chancel of the parish church. The mortality rate was high that winter and it is evident that Hall died suddenly, as his brief nuncupative (oral) will was dictated on the day of his death. The suffix added to his name in the register, medicus peritissimus (most skilled doctor), is testimony to his local reputation. This warm tribute might also echo the close relationship between Hall and the vicar, Thomas Wilson, forged during their recent dispute with the Corporation.
