Joan, John and Mary Shakespeare’s fifth child, was baptized on April 15, 1569, according to the Holy Trinity Church parish register. It was a normal practice at the time to use the name of a deceased child for later offspring. Next to the entry, an “X” added by a later hand highlights its significance. Joan, the Shakespeare’s third child to reach adulthood, was baptized around two and a half years after Gilbert.
Baptism entries in the parish register from March to July 1569 are in English, instead of the Latin in use since John Bretgirdle’s appointment as vicar in 1561. However, most marriage and burial entries from March to July 1569 were still made in Latin.
